Comfort women are a group of women who had been recruited as sex slaves for Japanese Soldiers. During world War II there were between eighty and two hundred thousand women who had been relocated from the Korean Peninsula as well as the Philippines, China and Taiwan. Other asian countries were also targetted at this time.
These comfort women were victimized and only a few are still alive. Thirty seven South Korean victims are remaining and their mission has been gaining significant acclaim. There are a lot of vulnerabilities that relate to the agendas behind their goals. Statues exist around the world with multiple found in Hong Kong, East Asia as well as oher countries. The Statue of Peace has been a significant point that caused protests among South Koreans at large.
Comfort women have been a debated issue and are at the central of politics at a domestic level. The president Park Geun-hye as well as other notable leaders from Japan have pointed to the importance of addressing this issue and improving the overall outcomes of sociological and economical change. The Japanese government has accepted some responsibility for their actions, by publically admiting to have acquired women for their soldier. They have also agreed to provide a fund that includes approximately nine million dollars in order to be spenton the remaining forty six women at the time. Their public apologies and remorse have contributed greatly towards the way that the Japanese government has been treated and developed.
The legislation behind these documents has been adapted from a declaration that was officially designated in 1993. The agreement was established one year ago and opponents had contributed greatly to the establishment of another statue near Busan South Korea. Despite the efforts that have already taken place, South Korea does not agree that the comfort women stories dispute has been settled. Public polls showed that there were more than seventy five percent of South Koreans who found the agreement did not honor the suffering and other aspects of disgrace that may have taken place. Another more personalized reason for this has to do with the way that Korea perceives the event as a blatant act of humiliation. Changes to the way that people have reacted in response to imperialism in Japan are significant and have influenced the public sphere of conversation about this issue at large.
Comfort women have begun to speak up since 1991 to a greater degree. There is a proposal in Seoul to monumentalize the events by erecting a statue in the center of the city. Another aspect of this debate is related to the way that women are portrayed in their experiences. Most controversial depictions that speak to the emotional and physical assault than women endured are not received well by the public.
Comfort women were both sex workers for pay while others were just servants. Many young as well as older women were forced into the roles of sexual slaves. Korean men were also involved with the scheme. There is a significant amount of controversy surrounding the experiences of these women because it implies the notion of sex slaves sleeping with the enemy.
Overall, the issues surrounding this are hotly debated in South Korea. There is significant evidence that shows women who are fully grown and are not young and vaginal. The innocent and outwardly pure appearances of these women have contributed greatly to the stereotypes that are propagated about this event. The rightful story as well as the legacy of these women must be honored with more diligent research as well as attention to detail with regards to history.
