The History of DCA in Cancer Research and Treatment

Dichloroacetate sodium or DCA is aninexpensive and is a simple chemical compound that is like combining salt and vinegar. It was first used in cases of a rare disease called “congenital lactic acidosis”. This means that it is not really a “new: drug and it has been used in humans safely for years. Studies from this application of DCA indicate mild to moderate side effects.

Various forms

DCA cancer is for sale in several different forms including:

  • Oral liquid
  • Topical cream
  • Oral capsules

It can be given intravenously. It is absorbed by the body and the oral administration of DCA can be done at home. IV administration will be done at a cancer clinic or a physician’s office. The time of treatment that is recommended is between 6 and 8 weeks, although if the cancer is slow-growing it requires longer treatment time.

For patients with other problems

DCA was found to be for used safely in patients who have moderately severe failure renally, has heart arrhythmias, heart failure or diabetes. It is advised to speak with your personal care physician about specific situations.

The history of DCA

In 2007 at the University of Alberta, DCA; is a simple molecule, found to kill off cancer cells in breast, lung and brain cancers in rats, while not doing any harm to healthy cells. It was found that DCA would turn on natural apoptosis or cell death in cancerous cells of rats in the lab. It was observed also that DCA blocked the procedure by which glucose is used by cancer cells, removing their source of energy by starving them. It is notable, that the blocking glucose by healthy cells is not seen. Researchers around the world have confirmed these findings.

Not widely available

However, since this has been effective does not mean that it is widely accessible as a treatment for cancer. As always, profit margins really are determining factor.

Human studies

Studies with human were first published in 2010, authorising DCA to be effective for treating glioblastoma which is a type of brain cancer.

What types of Cancer

There is indication that DCA is effective for several types of cancer cells. Based on both lab and human studies together with case reports, the types of cancer studied so far includes:

  • Brain
  • Cervical
  • Breast
  • Colon
  • Lymphoma
  • Lung
  • Ovarian
  • Uterine
  • Prostate
  • Cancer of unknown primary source

It also has been found to boost the effectiveness of radiation.

Where to find DCA?

In Canada, US and majority of Europe, DCA is arranged by physicians. It is recommended not to get DCA from any other means, as some types of DCA are not suitable for human ingesting.
